What is CHAMPVA?
CHAMPVA (Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs) is a comprehensive healthcare benefits program that shares the cost of covered healthcare services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries. It is available to the spouse or surviving spouse and children of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, or who died from a service-connected condition or in the line of duty. CHAMPVA is not the same as TRICARE, which serves active duty members and retirees.

Surviving spouse of a veteran who died from a VA-rated service-connected condition
Surviving spouse of a veteran who died in the line of duty (not due to misconduct)

Surviving spouse of a servicemember who died in the line of duty
